JD Vance Speaks Out After Windows Are Smashed at His Home

JD Vance has addressed an incident involving his Ohio home after a man was arrested early Monday morning, January 5. Authorities say the suspect caused damage to the property by smashing windows.

Importantly, Vance and his family were not home at the time.

Suspect Arrested Near the Property

Shortly after midnight, U.S. Secret Service officers physically detained a man outside the home, according to authorities. The Cincinnati Police Department then took him into custody, Fox News reported.

Police later identified the suspect as 26-year-old William DeFoore.

Charges Filed

Prosecutors charged DeFoore with multiple offenses, including:

  • Obstructing official business

  • Criminal damaging or endangering

  • Criminal trespass

  • Vandalism

According to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, investigators believe the suspect caused property damage, including broken exterior windows.

Family Was Out of State

Police confirmed that no family members were inside the home during the incident. They also said the family was not in Ohio at the time.

Additionally, a law enforcement official told CNN that the suspect did not gain entry to the residence. Authorities are still investigating whether the home was specifically targeted because of Vance or his family.

Vance Thanks Law Enforcement

Soon after the arrest, Vice President Vance addressed the situation publicly on X.

“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” he wrote. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows.”

He then thanked first responders. “I’m grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.”

Vance also confirmed that his family had already returned to Washington, D.C.

A Request to the Media

The vice president ended his statement with a direct request to news outlets.

“We try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service,” he wrote. “In that light, I am skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Secret Service continues to coordinate with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as prosecutors review the case and potential next steps.

Fox News noted that Vance had been in Cincinnati as recently as last weekend.

Broader Political Context

A spokesperson for the vice president previously said Vance returned to Cincinnati after the conclusion of a U.S. operation in Venezuela that reportedly resulted in the removal of President Nicolás Maduro.

The situation has heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas. While former President Donald Trump has claimed the U.S. brought Venezuela under American control, acting President Delcy Rodríguez has rejected those claims and criticized the intervention as a violation of international law.

Rodríguez has also continued to demand Maduro’s return, setting the stage for a prolonged geopolitical standoff.
