But that safety net doesn\u2019t always hold. At 88 years old, US Army veteran Ed Bambas was still working five days a week just to survive. After retiring from General Motors in 1999, Ed believed he had earned a stable pension that would carry him comfortably through retirement. He owned his home and felt secure about the future. Everything changed in 2009 when GM filed for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-9\">\n<div id=\"ternalnews.com_responsive_2\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23201474937\/ternalnews.com\/ternalnews.com_responsive_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nearly 20,000 salaried workers from a GM subsidiary lost their pensions and retirement benefits. Ed was among them. The cuts devastated his finances. He also lost healthcare coverage and most of his life insurance \u2014 a painful blow, especially as his wife Joan battled serious illness before passing away in 2018. Forced to sell his home, Ed returned to work, taking jobs at Ace Hardware and Meijer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">\n<div id=\"anchorslot\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\"><\/div>\n<p>Even in his late eighties, he worked eight-hour shifts, five days a week, quietly carrying the weight of lost promises. His story might have remained unnoticed if not for TikTok influencer Sam Weidenhofer, who met Ed during an interview in Michigan. Moved by his resilience, Sam tipped him $400 \u2014 then launched a GoFundMe to help cover living and medical expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in from across the country, and the fundraiser surpassed $1.5 million. After decades of service \u2014 to his country and his employer \u2014 Ed can finally retire with dignity.
