The frantic search for Nancy, the missing mother of \u201cToday\u201d co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its fourteenth day. Investigators were seen setting up a tent outside the Tucson-area crime scene early Thursday morning \u2014 just hours after Savannah shared an emotional video pleading for her mother\u2019s safe return.<\/p>\n

Authorities have canvassed the neighborhood and asked residents to hand over any home surveillance footage that might assist the investigation. Arizona officials say they\u2019ve now received nearly 20,000 tips connected to the disappearance of the 84-year-old grandmother.<\/p>\n

Amid the growing urgency, a new and troubling development emerged: a third ransom note, reportedly sent to TMZ. In the message, the sender claimed they were \u201cnot being taken seriously,\u201d raising fresh questions about who is behind the communication \u2014 and whether it is credible.<\/p>\n

Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker says he is deeply skeptical.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t think anything TMZ has brought forward has panned out,\u201d Swecker said during an appearance on Fox News\u2019 The Faulkner Focus. He suggested that such public platforms can become vehicles for opportunists. \u201cIt\u2019s a good vehicle for people to come in and do this. TMZ gets some viewership, and it sort of ties up the investigative team trying to run this down. But I sense a scam here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swecker was careful to add that he could be mistaken. \u201cI may be absolutely wrong,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cBut bottom line, I\u2019m very skeptical of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His doubts go beyond the ransom letters themselves. In recent days, Swecker has openly questioned whether the case resembles a traditional kidnapping-for-ransom scenario at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very skeptical of this,\u201d he told Fox News. \u201cIs this really a kidnapping? Does somebody really have her, and is she really alive?\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Swecker, most kidnappers seeking ransom move quickly to establish credibility. They typically provide clear, verifiable proof of life \u2014 such as a current photo, video, or audio recording \u2014 to ensure payment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this was a kidnapping, it would be a very simple matter to authenticate and provide proof of life,\u201d he explained, noting that no confirmed image or recording has been released publicly to validate the claims.<\/p>\n

\nThat absence has fueled speculation that the Guthrie family may be dealing with opportunists rather than a coordinated abduction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really think there\u2019s a third party here that\u2019s just playing with them,\u201d Swecker said, suggesting that scammers could be exploiting the high-profile nature of the case.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the emotional toll on the family is evident. Savannah Guthrie and her relatives have publicly acknowledged the ransom demands and signaled they are prepared to comply if it means bringing Nancy home safely. The family\u2019s desperation has been palpable, with Savannah directly appealing to the suspected abductor in recent statements.<\/p>\n

Authorities have intensified their efforts. The reward for information leading to an arrest has now doubled to $100,000. The FBI\u2019s Phoenix division also announced that a forensic review of doorbell camera footage conducted by its Operational Technology Division uncovered new \u201cidentifying details\u201d about the potential suspect.<\/p>\n

Officials describe the individual seen in the footage as a man standing approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build. Investigators have also identified the backpack worn by the suspect: a black, 25-liter \u201cOzark Trail Hiker Pack.\u201d<\/p>\n

The evolving details \u2014 from ransom notes to surveillance analysis \u2014 have only added layers of complexity to an already unsettling case.<\/p>\n

Whether this is a carefully orchestrated kidnapping, a cruel hoax, or something else entirely remains unclear.
