<\/div>\n
It\u2019s not glamorous work.<\/p>\n
But it keeps the lights on. Barely.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m Evan. I\u2019m 36. I\u2019m a mechanic. And I\u2019m raising three six-year-old triplets on my own.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause it\u2019s the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
He studied me for a long moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, son?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n
He asked about my kids. I told him about the triplets. About my mom. About the dull yellow house near the main road.<\/p>\n
I went home feeling lighter.<\/p>\n
I had no idea what was coming.<\/p>\n
The next morning, pounding on my front door jolted me awake.<\/p>\n
7:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
I opened it \u2014 and froze.<\/p>\n
A sheriff stood there.<\/p>\n
My first thought wasn\u2019t jail.<\/p>\n
It was my kids inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I returned it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He studied my face, then made a call.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah. It\u2019s him. Bring everything in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Three officers walked into my house carrying big boxes.<\/p>\n
I stared at them, completely lost.<\/p>\n
\u201cGary is my father,\u201d the sheriff said.<\/p>\n
My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I got home from my shift, he told me about you. About how you brought back his pension. How you wouldn\u2019t take a reward. He said you have three six-year-olds.\u201d<\/p>\n
The officers started opening the boxes.<\/p>\n
Winter coats. Brand-new shoes. School supplies. Groceries. Bags and bags of groceries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a year\u2019s worth of essentials for your kids,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cClothes, school gear, supplies. I added the groceries and gas cards. My dad insisted.\u201d<\/p>\n
My mom started crying behind me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t accept this,\u201d I said weakly.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, you can,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou could\u2019ve kept that money. No one would\u2019ve known. But you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat on my couch after they left, surrounded by boxes, and I cried harder than I have in years.<\/p>\n
My daughter came downstairs and pulled out a pink winter coat.<\/p>\n
