Vintage life hacks that continue to work well

Why Old-Fashioned Life Hacks Still Work
Isn’t it funny how the tricks our parents and grandparents taught us work best? Useful knowledge passes down through generations. The special tips are the ones that stick around. Here are 8 old-fashioned life hacks that still work great today.

1. Polish Copper with Ketchup
It sounds strange, but ketchup works wonders on copper. Simply spread some ketchup on a cloth, sprinkle salt on top, then rub it on the copper surface. You’ll see it shine in no time.

2. Safely Pick Up Broken Glass
Don’t risk cutting yourself! Use a damp cloth to pick up tiny shards of broken glass. This method is safe and effective, cleaning up even the smallest pieces.

3. Zip Up Before Washing
Always zip up your zippers before tossing clothes in the wash. This prevents the zipper teeth from catching on other fabrics and causing damage.

4. Use a Rain Barrel
Every home should have a rain barrel. Place it under your eavestrough spout, and you’ll collect free, recycled water perfect for watering your garden.

5. Test Batteries the Easy Way
To check if a battery still works, hold it about an inch above a hard surface and drop it. If it bounces and lands upright, it’s good. If it falls on its side, toss it out.

6. Remember Days in Each Month
Wonder how many days a month has? Use the knuckle trick! Each knuckle and valley on your hand represents a month. Knuckles are months with 31 days; valleys have 30 or fewer (like February).

7. Master Spelling with a Simple Rule
Spelling can be tricky, but this saying helps: “I before E, except after C.” It makes remembering tricky words with “ie” or “ei” easier.

8. Disinfect Sponges Properly
To disinfect sponges or fabric items, boil them in water for 10 minutes. This kills germs and helps your sponge last longer.

Old-school hacks like these prove that simple solutions stand the test of time. Try them out and see how well they still work!
