The first blue Orbeez rolled across the patio and tapped my slipper before I understood what I was seeing. Our pool was completely covered—millions of bright beads packed so tightly I couldn’t see the water. Then they shifted, and beneath them I noticed a large, dark shape resting at the bottom.
“Carmelo,” I called out. He rushed in, dropped his coffee, and immediately spotted something worse—the pool cover I had secured the night before had been carefully removed and folded aside. This wasn’t an accident. Someone had come in deliberately.
As he reached for the net, I stopped him. Only one person had ever begged to fill the pool with Orbeez—our son Mason, who had been missing for three years.
Mason disappeared during a crowded summer festival when he was six. One moment his hand was in mine, the next he was gone. Weeks of searching brought nothing. After that, the pool became a painful reminder of his laughter and the way he always shouted, “Watch me!”
We began slowly clearing the beads until a sealed acrylic case emerged. Inside were drawings, toys, bracelets—and on top, Mason’s cracked yellow shovel, the one he carried everywhere the day he vanished. Carmelo called the police immediately.
When detectives arrived and opened the case, the truth came out. The items weren’t evidence—they were memories. Children had left letters and gifts at a memorial after Mason disappeared, and the community had kept adding to it over the years.
Without telling us, volunteers had gathered everything into the case and returned it to us, filling the pool with Orbeez because Mason loved them. It was meant as a tribute, not a threat—just a deeply misguided act.
That evening, as I read the letters, I discovered pieces of my son I had never known. Small kindnesses, shared moments, laughter with other children. For the first time, my memory didn’t end with losing his hand—but with who he was before that.
I picked up a single blue Orbeez and placed it inside his yellow shovel. The mystery of where he went remained. But now, when I think of that day, I see him smiling—making sure another child found the brightest one.
