Those Hard Knots Near Your Fingernails May Not Be “Just Aging”…

Small, hard bumps forming near the last joints of the fingers—close to the nails—are a concern many families notice over time. They often start as a single lump and gradually appear on multiple fingers, which can make them seem like they are spreading.

One of the most common causes of these bumps is a form of hand osteoarthritis. When this condition affects the joints closest to the fingertips, it can lead to firm, bony growths known as Heberden’s nodes. These develop slowly and may appear on several fingers.

At the beginning, these nodes can cause discomfort, tenderness, or stiffness. However, once they are fully formed, some people experience little to no pain. The condition is more common with age, though aging alone does not guarantee it will occur.

The reason the bumps seem to “spread” is not because one moves to another finger. Instead, multiple joints may develop similar changes over time, leading to new bumps appearing in different places.

Along with visible lumps, other symptoms may include stiffness after rest, reduced movement, swelling, and difficulty gripping objects. Fingers may also change shape as the joints enlarge.

Not all bumps are caused by arthritis. In some cases, they may be digital mucous cysts—fluid-filled sacs that form near the joint and can even affect the nearby nail. Other types of lumps are also possible.

It’s important to monitor these changes. Rapid growth, significant pain, redness, warmth, or difficulty moving the finger are signs that should not be ignored and need medical attention.

While many of these bumps are harmless, it’s best not to assume. A proper examination is the only way to understand the cause and ensure the right care if needed.
