Here’s How to Go to Sleep Fast (in Under 1 Minute)

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a simple relaxation exercise often associated with Dr. Andrew Weil. It involves breathing in for 4 counts, holding the breath for 7 counts, and slowly breathing out for 8 counts. The method is commonly used to promote relaxation, manage stress, and make it easier to settle down before sleep.

To perform it, sit or lie in a comfortable position. Place the tip of your tongue just behind your upper front teeth. First, breathe out completely through your mouth. Then inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for 7, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. That completes one cycle.

Beginners can start with four cycles. The important part is maintaining a comfortable rhythm rather than forcing yourself to count slowly. If holding your breath for seven seconds feels uncomfortable, slow down gradually as you become more familiar with the exercise.

The technique may help interrupt the rapid, shallow breathing that often accompanies stress or anxiety. A slow, controlled exhale can encourage relaxation and shift attention away from racing thoughts. Some people also use it when they wake up during the night or feel angry, nervous, or overwhelmed.

Other sleep-friendly habits can also help. Creating a calm routine before bed, reducing caffeine later in the day, and writing down tomorrow’s tasks may make it easier to quiet an active mind. If you cannot sleep after lying awake for a while, getting up and doing something calm in dim light can sometimes be more helpful than continuing to worry in bed.

The 4-7-8 method is not a guaranteed cure for insomnia or anxiety, but it can be a simple tool to include in a relaxing routine. If sleep problems are persistent or significantly affect daily life, it is a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional.
