Why You Should Stop Ordering Lemon Water At Restaurants

A lemon wedge looks harmless, even refreshing, as it floats in your drink. It suggests cleanliness and health, something natural added to something simple. Most people never question it.

But that small slice often travels a long path before it reaches your glass. From delivery crates to kitchen counters, from cutting boards to knives and hands, it passes through many surfaces.

Unlike cooked food, it never meets heat that could kill bacteria. It is served raw, handled quickly, and often prepared in batches during busy hours.

Studies that tested lemon slices in restaurants have found bacteria on many of them. Not because lemons themselves are unsafe, but because of how frequently they are touched.

Every step in preparation adds another opportunity for contamination. A rushed rinse, a reused knife, or unwashed hands can quietly transfer microbes onto the fruit.

To be clear, this does not mean every lemon wedge is dangerous. Most people consume them without ever getting sick, and many restaurants follow proper hygiene practices.

Still, the risk exists, especially in places where food safety standards slip during busy periods. For some people, even a small exposure can lead to illness.

If you prefer to avoid that uncertainty, skipping the lemon is a simple choice. At home, washing the fruit thoroughly and using clean tools lets you enjoy the same flavor with far more control—and far less risk.
