What the Color of Your Urine Can Tell You From Urochrome to Unusual Shades

Urine color can give useful clues about hydration, diet, medications, and sometimes overall health. It changes mainly due to the concentration of a pigment called urochrome, which comes from the breakdown of old red blood cells.

The most important factor affecting urine color is hydration. When you drink enough water, urine becomes lighter. When you are dehydrated, it becomes darker and more concentrated.

Clear urine usually means you are drinking a lot of fluids. While this is generally not harmful, consistently clear urine may suggest you are overhydrating, especially if you also urinate very frequently.

Pale yellow urine is considered the healthiest and most normal color. It shows that your body has a good balance of hydration without excess or shortage.

Dark yellow or amber urine often indicates mild dehydration. This commonly happens after exercise, hot weather, or not drinking enough fluids, and usually improves quickly with water intake.

Orange urine can be caused by dehydration, certain medications, vitamin supplements, or food coloring. In rare cases, it may signal liver or bile issues, especially if other symptoms like yellowing skin appear.

Pink or red urine may come from foods like beets or berries, but it can also indicate blood in the urine, which may be linked to infections, kidney stones, or other urinary tract conditions and should be checked if unexplained.

Brown urine can be a sign of severe dehydration, certain drugs, liver or kidney problems, or intense exercise. Blue or green urine is rare and usually linked to medications, dyes, or uncommon medical conditions.

You should see a doctor if urine color changes come with pain, burning, fever, back pain, blood, or if abnormal color persists even when you are well hydrated. In most cases, though, changes are harmless and related to lifestyle factors.
