What Does the “M” on an RSVP Card Actually Mean?

The letter “M” on a traditional RSVP card can seem confusing, especially to people unfamiliar with older invitation customs. However, its purpose is quite simple. The “M” represents the beginning of a courtesy title that the guest is expected to complete before writing their name.

Traditionally, guests would continue the letter by adding a title such as “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss.” For example, someone might write “Mr. John Smith” or “Ms. Jane Smith.” The letter is therefore not a question or a special instruction, but simply a traditional starting point.

This format comes from older standards of formal invitation etiquette, when using courtesy titles was much more common. Including the first letter allowed guests to complete their preferred title themselves while maintaining the formal appearance of the RSVP card. Modern invitations, however, have become more flexible.

Guests who do not use traditional courtesy titles do not need to feel restricted by the “M.” They can write the title they normally use or simply provide their name, depending on the space and instructions. The main purpose of the line is identifying who is responding, rather than forcing someone to use a particular title.

The “M” should also not be confused with questions about meals, guest numbers, or attendance. RSVP cards can contain several different sections, including meal selections, dietary requirements, and confirmation of attendance. Those sections are generally labeled clearly, while the “M” is specifically connected to the guest’s name and title.

For people designing their own invitations, using the traditional “M” is completely optional. A simple “Name” or “Guest Name” line may be clearer and more convenient, particularly for modern celebrations where traditional formalities are less important.

When completing an RSVP card, guests should primarily follow the host’s instructions. They should clearly write the names of the invited guests, confirm whether they are attending, and answer any additional questions. If the invitation specifies a particular number of guests, only those invited should be included.

Ultimately, there is nothing mysterious about the “M” found on many traditional RSVP cards. It is simply the first letter of a courtesy title, followed by space for the guest’s name. Whether completing a classic wedding invitation or another formal event RSVP, guests can use their preferred title or clearly provide their name.
