A crunchy pink mass protruding from a wall can look alarming, but in many cases it is simply expanding spray foam insulation used during construction or repairs to seal gaps around pipes, windows, wiring, or door frames.

Spray foam comes in many colors depending on the product and manufacturer, including pink, yellow, blue, or orange. Color alone is not reliable for identification. Its texture, location, and how it is bonded to surrounding material are more useful clues.

When applied, the foam expands as it cures, sometimes pushing through cracks or exceeding the space available. This can leave uneven, bubbly formations that harden on the surface, especially if excess material was not trimmed after installation.

Before touching it, inspection is important. Fresh or uncured foam can irritate skin and eyes, and poorly ventilated fumes may be harmful. Wearing basic protection is reasonable, but unknown substances should not be scraped or disturbed without understanding what they are.

Moisture changes the diagnosis. If there are stains, damp drywall, musty odors, or spreading patches, the issue may be water damage or mold rather than insulation. In such cases, the source of moisture must be found and fixed first.

Pests can also create confusion. Insect nests, egg cases, or droppings may resemble irregular wall growths, though they usually come with other signs like movement, holes, or scratching sounds. Professional inspection may be needed if activity is suspected.

If the material is confirmed as cured spray foam and the wall is dry, excess can often be carefully trimmed and covered. Larger areas or fire-rated walls should be handled by a professional to ensure safety and compliance with building standards.

The key is documentation and observation. Photos from different angles and notes about texture, smell, and changes over time help identify the cause. Most cases turn out to be harmless insulation rather than anything living, but proper checking ensures no hidden structural or moisture issue is missed.
