Three-year-old Briella Holmes died on July 27, 2026, four days after she was found unresponsive at a residence in the Meadows of Boynton Beach community.

According to a report detailing the police investigation, Boynton Beach officers were called to the home shortly after 11 a.m. on July 23 after receiving a report that a child was not breathing. Officers immediately began life-saving measures. Boynton Beach Fire Rescue then transported Briella to a nearby hospital, where she remained in critical condition until she passed away.

Police said Briella and her sibling had been at a babysitter’s home when the accident occurred. The babysitter reportedly left the residence and placed the children in the care of the babysitter’s spouse.

Authorities stated that while the children played downstairs, the spouse remained upstairs and would periodically check on them and bring the kids snacks.

It was during one of those checks that the spouse made a devastating discovery: Briella was found with her head trapped inside a toy kitchen play set. The spouse removed the toddler from the play set and immediately began performing life-saving measures until first responders arrived.

Investigators said Briella’s sibling provided an account of the frightening situation, revealing how some toys had fallen inside the play kitchen. Police believe Briella became trapped while attempting to retrieve them. What ultimately caused her death was later addressed by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner.

In an exclusive account of what happened to the little girl and the medical examiner’s findings, the office said her manner of death was an “accident,” with the reported cause being “probable positional asphyxia.”

No criminal charges have been announced in connection with Briella’s death, and the police investigation remains ongoing.

The Toy Kitchen Had Been Purchased Secondhand

As questions mounted, authorities disclosed another detail about the play set. Boynton Beach Police Public Information Officer Chelsea Sanabia said it was “an old wooden set that was bought off of Facebook Marketplace a few years ago.”

According to a report examining the unidentified play kitchen, investigators do not believe they know its make, model, or brand, meaning authorities have not publicly identified the exact product involved in Briella’s death or established whether it had ever been subject to a safety warning or recall.

Still, the tragedy has inevitably renewed concerns about the potential dangers posed by large wooden play kitchens, particularly older or secondhand sets whose model information may no longer be available.

In 2025, nearly 192,000 KidKraft “Farm to Table” wooden play kitchens were recalled following the death of a 23-month-old Oregon boy in 2023. The child’s clothing reportedly became caught on a hook attached to the back of the kitchen, creating a strangulation hazard.

Backyard Kids, LLC, of Plano, Texas, announced the recall and offered replacement hooks for affected units. The hooks were designed to hold toy kitchen accessories such as pots and pans.

According to coverage of the massive product recall, the kitchens had originally been manufactured by KidKraft, Inc. They retailed between $120 and $270 and had been sold through KidKraft’s website, Amazon, and Walmart beginning in 2018. KidKraft filed for bankruptcy in May 2024.

It was unclear whether that development had any connection to the 2023 toddler death. However, it is worth reiterating that authorities have not identified Briella’s kitchen as a KidKraft product, and nothing released by police indicates that the two tragedies involved the same defect.

Marketplace Sales Have Faced Safety Scrutiny in the Past

The revelation that Briella’s play kitchen had reportedly been purchased through Facebook Marketplace adds another unsettling layer to the case. Facebook Marketplace and other resale platforms can provide families with affordable toys and household products.

However, secondhand buyers may not always know an item’s complete history, model number, missing parts, prior modifications, or recall status. In 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned Meta that banned and recalled products were appearing on Facebook Marketplace with “regular frequency.”

The agency said such items posed a serious threat to consumers, including infants and toddlers, according to a report about the regulator’s concerns over recalled Marketplace listings. Approximately half of the CPSC’s online product-removal requests in 2020 reportedly involved Facebook Marketplace.

By the time of the agency’s 2022 warning, that proportion had risen to roughly 75 percent. Meta said it had teams proactively enforcing commerce policies that prohibit the sale of recalled goods. The company also acknowledged that people may knowingly or unknowingly attempt to sell recalled products on resale platforms.

Once again, investigators have not said that Briella’s play kitchen was recalled, banned, or improperly listed. Still, the tragic loss of a life remains.

Briella’s Parents and Loved Ones Are ‘Devastated’

Briella’s mother, Suzi Holmes, said she and her husband, Jason Holmes, were too traumatized to discuss their youngest child’s death in detail. “We are just trying to get through each day,” she added.

In a family tribute, Briella was remembered as “pure joy in a tiny, stubborn, independent little package.” Her parents said she loved to sing “about everything and nothing,” and described her as a kind little girl with a beautiful ability to light up a room without even trying.

Briella also shared an especially close bond with her older brother, Brock, who was inside the home when the accident happened. “She adored her big brother, Brock, with her whole heart,” her parents said. They concluded their tribute with, “Briella, you were, and always will be, one of our life’s little miracles.”

Days after the family’s loss, Jason shared an emotional message with friends and supporters. In his Facebook post about the outpouring of support, he said the family had been overwhelmed by the compassion people have shown since Briella’s death.

“The donations, messages, and just knowing people are thinking of us has meant more than we can put into words,” Jason penned. He also shared the fundraiser created in Briella’s memory, helping spread the family’s request for assistance during an unbearably difficult time.

Briella’s grandmother, Carol Ramsey Eakins, also publicly mourned the little girl. In her Facebook tribute to her granddaughter, Carol wrote that she and her husband, Dave, are “very saddened” to share the loss of their beautiful granddaughter.

“The outpouring of love and support shown to her entire family over these past few days has been enormous and greatly appreciated,” she wrote. She also acknowledged, “Suzi, Jason and their son Brock have a challenging road ahead of them,” directing those who wished to help toward the family’s donation page.

Supporters Surpassed the Family’s Fundraising Goal

A GoFundMe campaign created in Briella’s memory described the toddler in the same glowing terms as her loved ones did, adding that the beloved toddler had touched countless lives through her love, laughter, and compassion.

Funds were requested to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, as well as other unexpected costs resulting from the tragedy. The original fundraising goal was $70,000, and supporters have since quickly pushed the total beyond that figure, raising more than $75,000.

“No donation is too small, and if you are unable to give, we would be deeply grateful if you would share this fundraiser and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers,” the campaign states.

The message concludes by promising that Briella will be “forever loved, forever missed, and forever” in her family’s hearts.

A Safety Expert Urged Caregivers to Remain Present

In light of the tragedy, President of Safe Kids Palm Beach County Kathy Wall issued a broader warning to parents and caregivers. “Our kids are our greatest assets, they’re our future, and we have to be present for them, day to day,” she said. “We have to have active supervision in keeping them safe.”

The play kitchen’s manufacturer and model remain unknown, leaving important questions about its construction and possible hazards unanswered. For Briella’s grieving family, however, the most important truth is already painfully clear.

A joyful little girl who loved singing and adored her big brother was taken from them in a freak accident, and a toy intended for play became the setting of their worst nightmare.
