Parents Lose 6-Year-Old Daughter After What Was Meant to Be a ‘Routine’ Procedure

“I have so many questions, and so many emotions.”

Those were the words Jordan Thompson used on her Facebook tribute after losing her 6-year-old sister, Emersyn “Emmy” Bridgers.

What began as a day the family hoped would improve Emmy‘s health instead ended in unimaginable heartbreak, and investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened.

The Six-Year-Old Was Looking Forward to First Grade

Just weeks before her death, Emmy had celebrated her kindergarten graduation from Euharlee Elementary School. According to a tribute shared by Bartow County Schools, the 6-year-old was excited to begin first grade. She had even picked out a rose-themed outfit for Open House and was looking forward to seeing her classmates again.

Her teacher affectionately called her “Little Momma” because of the care and compassion she showed other students.

The district also remembered Emmy as a little girl who “never met a stranger.” She loved everyone, was always ready to give a hug, and had a smile that brightened every room she entered.

The Family Had Already Been Facing Heartbreak

In the days leading up to Emmy’s hospital visit, the family had already been grieving another heartbreaking loss. On July 26, her mother, Abigail McKenzie Street, shared an emotional Facebook post mourning the death of Emmy’s father, Zachery.

In the post, Abigail reflected on the traits Emmy inherited from him. “All of my daughter’s quirks that she inherited, being sly, her crazy laugh when she gets too wound up, her wide grin.”

“Her naturally puffy little eyes, her sick sense of humor, a tan I’ll ALWAYS envy, her big feet, her beautiful little nose, her natural ability to captivate people,” Abigail’s post added.

The Family Expected a Routine Procedure

According to WSB-TV, Emmy’s family said she went to the hospital for what was meant to be a “routine” tonsillectomy. Instead, the little girl died on July 27.

Rather than returning home to continue preparing for first grade, her family was suddenly left planning a funeral and searching for answers.

Emmy’s Sister Remembered the Little Girl Everyone Loved

As loved ones struggled to process the loss, Emmy’s sister, Jordan, shared a heartbreaking tribute in a Facebook post.

“Yesterday was the worst day of our entire lives… it feels like a horrible dream that we are stuck in. Emersyn went to be with Jesus yesterday afternoon, and we can not wrap our heads around it. She was only 6 years old… she didn’t even get a real chance at life.”

Jordan said she was left with countless questions but found comfort knowing how full of love her sister’s short life had been:

“I’m so hurt, but I also find peace knowing she lived the HAPPIEST six years possible. She was always smiling and always pouring kindness into those around her. She had the most beautiful big brown eyes, a laugh that was contagious, and a heart bigger than the sun.”

“I’m happy she never truly had to witness the evil of this world. She was too pure. I’m sure she’s up there catching up with daddy and in the arms of Jesus, but selfishly I wish she was still here with us,” Jordan’s post read on.

She also reflected on the close bond they shared. “She was my best girl, I took her everywhere with me. She wanted to be just like her big sissy. I was even given the blessing to name her; Emersyn Paisleigh Bridgers.”

Investigators Then Shared an Unexpected Update

As family and friends mourn, authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding Emmy’s death. WSB-TV reported that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy.

Then officials disclosed a detail that left even more questions unanswered. According to Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton, Emmy’s scheduled surgery ultimately did not happen.

The coroner’s office said investigators are waiting on medical records to determine what treatment she received before her death, and no additional details have been released.

A Procedure Performed Every Day

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove the tonsils and is most commonly performed in children. The operation usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Additional information from ABC News notes that more than 530,000 tonsillectomies are performed each year on children under 15 in the United States. While the procedure is generally well tolerated, complications can include bleeding, breathing difficulties, dehydration, and lingering pain.

Authorities have not indicated that any complication from a tonsillectomy contributed to Emmy’s death, and investigators continue to await additional medical information.

The Community Came Together for Emmy

As the investigation continues, the Bartow County community has rallied around Emmy’s family. According to the family’s GoFundMe page, Alvis Miller & Sons Funeral Home chose to cover the full cost of her funeral and burial. Organizers said all donations would instead go directly to Emmy’s family as they grieve.

The fundraiser also announced a biker escort to accompany Emmy on her final ride, encouraging supporters to “pink it out!” by wearing pink or decorating motorcycles with pink ribbons in her honor.

According to Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home, visitation was scheduled for August 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a celebration of Emmy’s life at 4 p.m.

As family and friends prepared to say their final goodbyes, Jordan reflected on the lasting impact her little sister had on her life. “You saved me in so many ways. You encouraged me to wear my heart on my sleeve more than I already do. To love loudly and forgive easy. To laugh every chance you get, and never turn down a sweet treat!”

Jordan said she wishes she could have protected the little girl she loved so deeply. “I miss you so so much. Thank you for being you. I wish I could have saved you, but I promise to stay strong for you.”

She ended her tribute with a heartfelt promise that captured just how much Emmy meant to her. “Being your sister will always be my greatest blessing. And I just know you’re the prettiest angel.”
