Civil aviation official Carlos Padilla said the aircraft had barely left the ground when everything went wrong. It “made a sharp turn to the right of the runway and fell into the water” just off Roatan Island, transforming a routine takeoff into a fatal plunge. A nearby fisherman watched in horror as the plane dropped toward him, narrowly avoiding being struck as it smashed into the sea.
On shore, rescuers could see the wreckage but not reach it. Roatan Fire captain Franklin Borjas described a brutal scene: nearly 30 meters of jagged rocks, pounding surf, and no safe path. “You can’t get there while walking or swimming,” he explained, as precious minutes slipped away. Between the cliffs, the waves, and the sinking fuselage, the island’s beauty became a barrier, turning a desperate rescue into a haunting lesson in how fast everything can be lost.
