The Easy Oven-Cleaning Method Nana Swore By

Cleaning an oven is a chore many people put off, but Nana’s simple trick makes the process easy and low-effort. Instead of harsh chemicals or heavy scrubbing, this method relies on three common items: a dishwashing pod, a heatproof casserole dish, and water.

Start by preheating the oven to 200°F (93°C). While it heats, fill the casserole dish with water and place a dishwashing pod inside. Once ready, set the dish on the middle rack so the cleaning process can begin.

Leave the oven on for about an hour. As the water heats, steam forms and the pod releases enzymes and cleaning agents that help loosen grease, baked-on food, and sticky residue from interior surfaces.

After an hour, switch off the oven and allow it to cool slightly until it’s safe to reach inside. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the walls, door, and racks. Most grime should come away with minimal effort.

If stubborn spots remain, repeat the steaming process or gently scrub using a soft brush. Avoid abrasive tools that may damage surfaces, especially on glass doors or coated interiors.

This approach reduces strong chemical smells and is often preferred in homes with children or pets. It’s also cost-effective, since the items used are typically already available in most kitchens.

Using this method once a month helps prevent heavy grease buildup. Regular maintenance can support better oven performance and lower the chance of smoke or odors during cooking.

Nana’s trick shows that effective cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. By letting heat and steam do most of the work, you save time, protect your hands, and keep your kitchen fresh with very little effort.
