If your dog is sniffing your genital area,

1. Understanding Dog Behavior

Knowing how dogs communicate helps explain why they act the way they do.

One common behavior—sniffing people’s private areas—often confuses or embarrasses owners.

2. Why Dogs Sniff

According to Master Bowie, this behavior “is gathering information and saying hello.”

Humans have apocrine glands that release pheromones revealing details like “age, sex, mood, [and] health.”

These glands are concentrated in the armpits and genitals—so for dogs,

“since they can’t reach the armpits, so crotch it is.”

3. Communication Through Scents

Because dogs can’t talk, sniffing is their way of learning about others.

It’s similar to a human handshake or introduction—just their version of saying, “Nice to meet you.”

4. Gentle Training Tips

If the habit makes you uncomfortable, redirect it through training.

Use simple commands like sit or stay and reward your dog with treats to teach polite greetings.
