When a Powerful Storm Disrupted

By mid-afternoon, large parts of New Jersey had grown unusually quiet as a powerful winter storm slowed daily life.

Highways that normally carry steady traffic were nearly empty, with only occasional cars visible through blowing snow.

Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to

mobilize more resources and urging residents to stay off the roads unless travel was essential.

Authorities stressed that safety should come first as conditions worsened.

Snowplow crews worked throughout the day, but their progress was often quickly erased by strong winds pushing fresh snow back onto cleared roads.

Officials warned that even short trips could become dangerous.

Despite the severe weather, many communities showed strong support for one another.

Residents checked on elderly neighbors, shared updates, and offered help such as blankets, generators, or warm shelter during outages.

Community shelters also prepared to assist those in need.

For a state known for constant activity, the storm created a rare pause,

shifting attention from routine life to safety and helping neighbors while people waited for conditions to improve.
