House lawmakers narrowly rejected a war powers resolution to halt Trump’s attack on Iran, a day after the Senate voted down a similar measure. The tight 212-219 tally in the House is an early sign of unease in Congress as the rapidly widening conflict reorders U.S. priorities at home and abroad.
The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait shut down after retaliatory Iranian strikes on the country, becoming the second American diplomatic mission to fully halt work since the Iran war began. Kuwait is also where six American soldiers were killed by an Iranian drone Sunday.
Israel hinted at unnamed “surprises” ahead after its military said it had degraded most of Iran’s air defenses. Hours earlier, an Iranian official warned the U.S. against a potential ground invasion, an option U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hasn’t ruled out.
Trump wants to be involved in picking Iran’s next leader, he told Axios Thursday. The U.S. president called Mojtaba Khamenei, a son of the late supreme leader who is a possible candidate for the post, “unacceptable” and “a lightweight.”
Iranian state television aired a message Thursday from an ayatollah in Iran calling for the “shedding” of blood from Israelis and U.S. President Donald Trump. The message represented a rare call for violence by an ayatollah.
