After Opening Ceremony Reaction, JD Vance Sends Message to US Olympians

JD Vance has addressed Team USA athletes after he and his wife, Usha, were met with boos during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan, where they attended to support American competitors. The reaction was noticeable, with commentators acknowledging the mixed crowd response. Speaking afterward on CNN, the vice president urged athletes to focus on sport rather than politics. “You’re there to represent your country and hopefully win a medal,” Vance said. “You’re not there to get involved in politics.”

He emphasized unity, encouraging athletes to remember they represent all Americans. “When you represent the country, you represent Democrats and Republicans,” he noted, adding that political statements at the Olympics often draw strong reactions. Despite the moment, Vance praised most athletes, saying they continue to perform with dedication and enjoy broad national support. His comments came as some competitors shared mixed feelings about representing the United States amid ongoing political tensions.

Curler Richard Ruohonen said he hoped to reflect values of respect and compassion, while skier Hunter Hess admitted representing the country currently brings “mixed emotions.” Elsewhere, former President Donald Trump expressed surprise at reports of booing and defended the administration’s support for Team USA. Meanwhile, Olympic officials encouraged respect and sportsmanship, stressing that the Games remain focused on competition and unity.

The International Olympic Committee also highlighted the importance of fair play and welcomed continued engagement from the United States as future Olympic preparations move forward.
