Two Good Samaritans Honored for Saving Students from Burning School Bus in California.

Unexpected Heroes in Madera

MADERA, Calif. — What could have been a nightmare for a group of California parents turned into a story of courage and quick thinking. On Sept. 4, a Madera Unified school bus carrying 20 children caught fire, but thanks to two local farmworkers, disaster was averted.

Carlos Perea Romero and Angel Zarco noticed smoke billowing from the bus as they went about their day. Without hesitation, they sprang into action. “We were just making sure the kids were far away enough so they wouldn’t get hurt,” Zarco said. Moments later, the bus was engulfed in flames.

The pair worked through thick smoke, evacuating every student safely. “One more moment, and I don’t know what would have happened,” Romero reflected afterward. Zarco added, “I’m just happy to help out the community. This is where I grew up, and I’m glad to keep somebody safe.”

Their bravery did not go unnoticed. The Madera County Board of Supervisors honored them in a ceremony, recognizing their selfless courage, compassion, and dedication to the community. CAL FIRE Division Chief Larry Pendarvis emphasized, “Buses can be replaced, humans can’t.”

Sheriff Tyson Pogue praised the men’s quick thinking: “Without hesitation, they acted selflessly to protect others. Our community is stronger because of individuals like them.”

Perea and Zarco’s heroism is now forever etched in the hearts of their hometown. Perea’s daughter attended the ceremony, witnessing her father’s courage firsthand—a memory that will last a lifetime.
