Melania Trump Weighs In on Alex Pretti Case

Melania Trump made a rare political statement on January 27, calling for unity and peaceful protest following unrest in Minnesota after the death of Alex Pretti. Speaking on Fox & Friends, the First Lady urged calm amid growing demonstrations sparked by Pretti’s killing during a federal immigration enforcement operation. His death came just weeks after another fatal shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the same state.

“I’m against the violence, so please, if you protest, protest in peace,” Melania said, adding that the country needs to “unify in this time.” Public political remarks from her are uncommon, particularly those addressing law enforcement or her husband’s administration. She said President Donald Trump had spoken with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, describing the conversations as productive and focused on restoring order.

Trump later confirmed that some federal immigration officers would be withdrawn from the state as tensions continue. When asked whether the agent acted appropriately in shooting Pretti, the president declined to answer directly, saying the incident was under review. He did, however, criticize Pretti for carrying a firearm at the protest, calling it inappropriate, while insisting officials would eventually leave Minneapolis after completing their mission.

Pretti’s family and several witnesses have challenged claims that the shooting was an act of self-defense. While officials say a handgun was recovered, video footage does not show Pretti threatening agents with a weapon. His family described him as deeply affected by immigration enforcement in the city and committed to making a positive difference. “Alex always wanted to help people,” his sister Micayla said, calling his death devastating for those who knew him.
