Check your tickets people!

For many travelers, simply getting through the airport can be stressful. Delays getting to the airport, long security lines, and flight disruptions can turn an exciting journey into a headache. And that’s before considering what might be printed on your boarding pass.

Airport security has become increasingly strict over the years, and most people accept that extra checks help keep flights safe. While occasional additional screening is understandable, being randomly selected for heightened security can feel frustrating, especially if you’ve done nothing wrong.

One key detail to watch for on boarding passes to or from the U.S. is the code “SSSS.” This doesn’t indicate wrongdoing but signals that you’ve been selected for “Secondary Security Screening Selection,” meaning the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will inspect you and your belongings more thoroughly.

Travel influencer Jordyn Verzera shared a TikTok in 2024 showing her partner, JT Mocarski, experiencing this process. He had to separate all items from his bag, undergo swabbing, and power on his laptop for inspection. The process can be time-consuming and intrusive, but it’s part of TSA protocol.

Commenters on the video shared similar experiences. One reported that TSA scanned his phone and copied messages, pictures, and app data. Another noted being flagged repeatedly despite being a veteran and long-time federal employee. Others said they were selected because of past solo travel as a minor.

While the SSSS code may feel invasive, it is important to remember it is a security measure and not an accusation. The system aims to randomly screen passengers to maintain safety and reduce risk.

Travelers who receive SSSS should allow extra time at security, remain cooperative, and follow instructions carefully. Understanding what the code means can reduce anxiety and help the process go more smoothly.

Next time you check your boarding pass, take a moment to look for “SSSS” and be prepared. Awareness and patience make the difference between a stressful encounter and a manageable one.
