Why Is There an Extra Chain Hanging at the Back of a Tanker Truck?

Tanker trucks are designed with safety as their top priority, especially when transporting flammable liquids like fuel or chemicals. One small but crucial safety feature is the chain hanging from the back of the truck. Although many people overlook it, this chain plays an essential role: it prevents static electricity from building up. As a tanker truck moves, friction from the road and the constant movement of liquid inside the tank can create static charges. If these charges are not released, they can produce sparks — a dangerous risk when carrying flammable materials.

The grounding chain drags lightly on the road, allowing static electricity to safely discharge into the ground before it becomes a hazard. After several past accidents caused by static sparks, grounding systems became standard safety requirements. Today, regulations from the U.S. Department of Transportation and other international agencies require tanker trucks to use grounding methods like this.

Even with modern alternatives such as retractable grounding reels and anti-static additives, the simple chain remains one of the most reliable and cost-effective solutions. Despite common misconceptions, the chain is not for stabilizing the truck and it is far from outdated. Its constant contact with the road is what keeps the truck, its cargo, and the public safe.

To ensure it works properly, the chain must be regularly inspected for wear, rust, or damage. As long as it maintains ground contact, it continues to prevent dangerous static buildup. In short, this small hanging chain is a simple but powerful tool that helps prevent explosions, protects the environment, and keeps tanker transport safe.
