Democrats Face Pressure as “Schumer Shutdown” Nears One Month
The federal shutdown — now dubbed the “Schumer Shutdown” — is nearing four weeks,
leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers unpaid and key programs like SNAP and WIC at risk.
What began as a dispute over spending and border policy has become
“a prolonged test of endurance” damaging both the economy and public opinion.
Mounting Strain on Democrats
The Hill reports Senate Democrats are quietly seeking “off-ramps to end the stalemate without appearing to capitulate.”
One option is backing a GOP plan to pay federal employees during the closure.
“We’re trying to make sure that the most vulnerable
Americans don’t bear the brunt of Washington’s dysfunction,” said a Democratic aide.
Public Opinion Turns
Polls show 54% of voters now blame Democrats for the shutdown.
“It’s harder to point fingers when you’re the one steering the chamber,” analyst Caroline Bixby noted.
Growing Costs
Union leader Everett Kelley warned, “Federal workers are not bargaining chips.”
Economists say the standoff is already “rippling across local economies and household budgets.”
