Pressure and Prejudice
Society often pressures people to have children, while those who choose not to are criticized as selfish.
Yet when people with disabilities want children, they face even harsher judgment.
Lisa’s Decision
Over 20 years ago, Patti White’s daughter Lisa, who has Down syndrome, announced she was pregnant.
Patti recalled, “My mind went in all directions.
How could this be? Her boyfriend has Downs!” Despite criticism, the family supported Lisa’s decision.
Raising Nic
Lisa worked full-time, lived independently, and prepared for motherhood.
Her son Nic was born early and also had Down syndrome.
Lisa said, “It was hard for me to walk around when I was pregnant…
I felt like I was going to throw up.”
After Nic’s father died, Lisa and Patti raised him together.
Thriving Against Odds
Now 24, Nic is thriving. “I have two moms,” he said.
Patti proudly wrote, “They have overcome the odds and share tremendous love.”
