The humiliation of Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin’s mother: How a conservative family was shattered

The arrest of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has left his mother Amber Jones Robinson reeling — a woman once proud of her bright, conservative son now confronting the unimaginable reality that he could face the death penalty if convicted of charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice, and witness tampering.

On the evening of September 11, grainy FBI photos of the suspected gunman were released to the public. A disguise of sunglasses and a hat hid much of his face, but for Amber Robinson, the mother of three, it was unmistakably her first-born child.

That gut-wrenching recognition set off a chain of calls and frantic conversations in the Robinson household. Within hours, Amber and her husband Matt had convinced their son to surrender, bringing an end to the 33-hour nationwide manhunt.

From Conservative Roots to Radical Break

Amber and Matt Robinson raised Tyler in Washington, Utah, a conservative, Mormon stronghold. Their six-bedroom home was filled with family photos, holiday traditions, and trips to the shooting range. Amber, a social worker, often posted proudly about her sons’ achievements, while Matt worked in the family construction business.

Theirs was a staunchly Republican, Trump-supporting household. As a teen, Tyler even dressed up in a costume piggybacking Trump for Halloween in 2017, and a former classmate recalled the family as “diehard Trump.”

Tyler himself excelled in school, earning a $32,000 presidential scholarship to Utah State University, where Amber proudly filmed him reading his acceptance letter. “His options are endless,” she wrote at the time.

But somewhere along the way, his path shifted. He lasted just one semester at Utah State before dropping out and later took up an electrical apprenticeship. At the same time, he became deeply immersed in online gaming and internet subcultures, where friends say he absorbed memes and darker political currents.

A Political and Personal Shift

Over the past year, Amber noticed her son becoming more left-leaning, embracing LGBTQ rights and starting a relationship with his transgender roommate, Lance Twiggs.

The change clashed with the family’s conservatism and sparked tense discussions, particularly between Tyler and his father. According to charging documents, Tyler even criticized Kirk at a family dinner, calling his campus event a “stupid venue” and accusing him of spreading hate.

At the time, the remarks didn’t raise alarms. But in hindsight, they haunt Amber as warning signs she missed.

The Rifle and the Confession

The rifle allegedly used to kill Kirk had chilling ties to the family. Charging documents state the weapon appears to be a rifle given to him as a gift by his family, later referred to in his texts as “grandpa’s gun.” Found near the campus, the weapon carried bullet casings engraved with anti-fascist slogans and memes like “Hey Fascist! Catch!”

When confronted by his parents, Tyler first claimed he had been home sick. But Matt noticed the rifle matched the family gift and pressed his son further. In despair, Tyler allegedly admitted to the crime and even told his father he wanted to take his own life.

With the help of a family friend, a retired deputy sheriff, Amber and Matt convinced him to surrender peacefully. According to charging documents, Tyler texted Twiggs: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

A Family Torn Apart

For Amber, once a mother celebrating scholarship wins and family holidays, the reality is now unbearable. Her eldest son, the boy who once smiled in matching pajamas for Christmas photos, is accused of being the man who allegedly assassinated one of America’s most recognizable conservative voices.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson had been radicalized “in a fairly short amount of time.”

But for Amber, the questions linger. How did her promising son unravel so quickly? And how does a proud conservative mother reconcile the pride she once felt with the humiliation and heartbreak of raising an accused assassin who may now face the firing squad?
