The Tragedy
A van and truck collided head-on Tuesday night (13) on BR-251 in Grão Mogol, Minas Gerais, leaving nine dead and 12 injured.
Rescue teams from SAMU, the Fire Department, Civil Police, and PRF worked through the night.
Victims included men, women, and a 4-year-old boy.
Cause Under Investigation
Experts say the truck crossed into the opposite lane.
“It was a determining factor,” noted expert Hugo Leonardo.
Rain, fog, speeding, and poor road conditions may also have contributed.
Irregular Transport
The van carried 19 seasonal workers returning to Ceará but was not authorized for interstate transport, according to ANTT.
Authorities warn that low-cost clandestine travel remains common among rural workers.
Next Steps
Police are investigating whether the truck driver acted recklessly.
A final report is expected within 30 days. The case renews debate over unsafe highways, illegal passenger transport, and truck inspections in Brazil.
