A new poll shows how Americans really feel about Trump as his approval rating hits a new low

New Poll Shows Trump’s Approval Rating Plunges Amid Economic Frustration

Americans Blame Trump for Economic Struggles

A new poll reveals how Americans view Donald Trump’s leadership as his approval rating hits a record low.
Conducted by Morning Consult for the Century Foundation, the survey asked 2,007 Americans how they’re coping with the economy—and who they hold responsible. The majority blamed Trump.

Across the country, rising debt and a soaring cost of living have left many struggling. Six in ten respondents said Trump and his administration worsened the situation.

Grocery and Living Costs Spark Backlash

The numbers are striking:

  • 63% said Trump negatively affected grocery prices.

  • 61% said he harmed the overall cost of living.

  • 49% believed his policies directly damaged their personal finances.

Many respondents said they’re struggling to find well-paying jobs, buy homes, or afford childcare.
A staggering 83% worry about the price of groceries, while 47% are concerned about paying rent or mortgages.
Additionally, 64% cited unexpected medical costs as a major stressor, and 76% fear a financial recession is looming.

Tariffs Raise More Concerns

Nearly eight in ten Americans believe Trump’s tariff policies will raise the cost of everyday goods.
This includes 70% of Republican voters, revealing bipartisan concern.
Most agree that Trump’s tariffs may worsen—not improve—the economic burden.

Approval Ratings Hit New Lows

Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 40%, the lowest of his second term, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,023 adults.

Here’s the party breakdown:

  • 83% of Republicans approve of his performance.

  • Only 3% of Democrats share that view.

  • One-third of independents say they approve.

On specific issues:

  • 38% support his handling of the economy (up slightly from 35% in July).

  • 43% approve of his immigration policies (up from 41% weeks earlier).

Losing Support Among Men

Even among male voters—a group Trump once dominated—support is fading.
CBS/YouGov poll shows only 47% of men approve of Trump’s actions in his second term, while 53% disapprove.

Men also expressed frustration over key issues:

  • 65% said Trump hasn’t done enough to lower grocery prices.

  • 47% believe he focuses too much on deporting immigrants.

  • Just 33% think his immigration approach strikes the right balance.

Gallup poll released last week echoed this trend, putting Trump’s approval at 37%, the lowest on record for that metric.

Critics Slam Trump’s Economic Policies

Julie Margetta Morgan, president of the Century Foundation, sharply criticized Trump’s policies.
She told The Guardian:

“Donald Trump has raised prices through reckless tariffs, gutted support programs for health care, education, and food, and weakened federal regulators. Americans are now building their own safety nets using credit cards, payday loans, and student debt—while companies face little oversight.”

Final Thoughts

As inflation rises and household budgets stretch thin, Americans are expressing deep concern—and placing much of the blame on Trump’s economic agenda.
With approval ratings sinking and core support wavering, Trump faces mounting pressure as the nation heads into a turbulent financial future.7
