Authorities Rescue 60 Missing Children During ‘Operation Dragon-Eye’

In what has been described as the most effective missing child recovery mission in the agency’s history, the United States Marshals Service (USMS) recently led a powerful multi-agency effort across several Florida counties. The initiative, named Operation Dragon-Eye, resulted in the safe recovery or location of 60 critically missing children across Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco Counties.

The two-week operation was the result of collaboration between the USMS and various federal, state, and local agencies. According to William Berger, United States Marshal for the Middle District of Florida, the operation was distinguished by the care and follow-up support provided to the children involved. “What made this operation unique was that underaged critically missing children, aged 9 to 17, were not only recovered but also debriefed and provided with both physical and psychological care,” Berger said. “This included follow-up services to help ensure their long-term safety.”

The USMS defines “critically missing” youth as those at higher risk due to factors such as exposure to violence, exploitation, substance use, or unsafe environments. Operation Dragon-Eye not only focused on recovery, but also emphasized access to support services and safe placements for the children located.

“This was far more than just a Marshals operation—it was a community initiative,” said Mario Price, Deputy in Charge for the U.S. Marshals Service. He emphasized that the mission had three primary goals: to locate critically missing children, provide support services, and help prevent further harm by identifying individuals who might seek to exploit vulnerable youth.

Eight arrests were made in connection with the operation, with individuals facing serious charges. According to Marshal Berger, these cases involved adults who were aware of the children’s ages. “Some individuals had more than one child in their custody, which is deeply troubling,” he noted. The charges range from endangerment to illegal possession and other offenses.

Among the agencies involved was the St. Petersburg Police Department, which reported the recovery of 11 juveniles and two arrests, one involving a serious charge. “This operation underscores how essential teamwork is in public safety,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercow. “These outcomes reflect our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Operation Dragon-Eye highlights the power of coordinated action and continued support to ensure children are not only found but also given the opportunity to heal and thrive. The agencies involved are continuing to follow up with those recovered to ensure their safety and well-being moving forward.
