People are freaking out over Trump’s ‘awkward’ moment at the FIFA Club World Cup final that left players puzzled

Trump’s Awkward Moment at FIFA Club World Cup Final Sparks Online Backlash

Many people online are losing it over how Donald Trump behaved at the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday, July 13. Whenever the 47th President appears publicly, controversy follows—and this time was no different.

Chelsea’s Dominant Win Overshadowed by Trump’s Trophy Presentation

Trump attended the match at MetLife Stadium, where Chelsea thrashed Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. Cole Palmer scored twice, and new signing Joao Pedro added another, giving Chelsea a commanding first-half lead. Later, PSG’s João Neves received a straight red card, sealing the French team’s misery.

As Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup trophy, Trump joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino to present it to Chelsea captain Reece James. But while Infantino quickly stepped aside, Trump stayed on stage, forcing the players to celebrate around him.

Players Confused by Trump’s Stage Presence

USA Today reports that once Palmer realized Trump wasn’t leaving, he asked James, “Wait, wait, what’s he doing?” James reportedly asked Trump directly, “Are you going to leave?” but the president gave no clear answer. Palmer later told reporters, “I knew he was going to be there, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand where we lift the trophy. So, I was a bit confused.”

The scene made many cringe online. One Reddit user compared it to “a child at another kid’s birthday party trying to blow out the candles because they’re selfish and haven’t learned the day isn’t about them.” Another called it “absolutely embarrassing,” while a third found humor in FIFA president Infantino’s multiple attempts to get Trump off the stage.

Trump Comments on the Event and Future U.S. World Cup Hosting

After the match, Trump spoke to DAZN, praising FIFA’s growth and calling the event “a big thing.” He said, “Gianni’s a friend of mine. It’s great to watch. This is a little bit of an upset we’re watching today. FIFA has done fantastically well, it’s a growing sport.”

With the U.S., Mexico, and Canada set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many are curious if Trump will be involved in next year’s celebrations. Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance expressed enthusiasm for the tournament, joking about nearly breaking a trophy at a previous event and inviting fans worldwide to celebrate the sport.
