California, USA – A strong earthquake shook several areas of Southern California early Monday morning , alarming residents and highlighting the seismic vulnerability of this region of the country. The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 , was centered in an area where major tectonic plates meet , explaining its intensity and destructive potential.

“It felt really bad”: witness accounts
On social media, hundreds of users shared their experiences during the earthquake. Many described the shock as “brief but very strong” and reported that the ground shook suddenly, accompanied by a deep rumble.

Although no casualties or serious structural damage have been reported, several schools have suspended classes as a precaution, and emergency teams are inspecting key infrastructure such as bridges and hospitals.

An active seismic zone
The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the intersection of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates , specifically in the San Andreas fault system , one of the most studied and feared in the world.

Experts explain that this region is prone to earthquakes due to the constant lateral movement of the plates , which accumulate energy over time until suddenly releasing it in the form of an earthquake.

The USGS warned that aftershocks are very likely in the next 48 to 72 hours, although most would be of lesser intensity. However, they also noted that there is a slight possibility of a larger event , and they recommend that the public remain alert and have emergency backpacks ready.

Preparation and awareness
Local authorities emphasized the importance of being prepared for seismic events , especially in a region as vulnerable as California. They also urged residents to participate in drills and review home safety measures.

This morning’s earthquake was a stark reminder of California’s geological reality: living on an active fault means living with risk. Fortunately, this time there were no serious consequences, but the shock left thousands of people with a feeling they’ll never forget:
“It felt awful… but it could have been worse.”
